I think the reason why Mike McDermott(Matt Damon) kept checking was because he wanted to pretend he's on draw, and also, he knows that straight is a vulnerable hand but nothing can possibly beat him from flop and turn. But since River is a bitch in poker, he checked it all the way through to see how it comes out to be. When he saw turn, he is slightly relieved because 2 clubs came out and it got rid of flush possibility and only needs to hope board doesn't pair or doesn't get 8 or 9.

He had pocket 10s. If you slow motion this movie, you can see his cards flipping and you see clubs and spades all over the cards, if you count them, there are 10 of them. So it's pocket 10s. Anyways, I had trip 10s and he thought he was gonna win.

if you pause the movie on a clearer screen after KGB throws his cards, you can clearly see he had two black 10s

Such a good movie but they couldn't make lot of money off it in box office. If this movie was released later, when hold'em got popular, it would've made lot more.
During that time, WSOP invited Matt Damon and Edward Norton to play in WSOP for free. But they got eliminated by Doyle Brunson. Matt Damon says that it was an honor because it's same as playing basketball against Michael Jordan. You know you're gonna lose but it's an honor to play against them.

KGB is like FBI of Russia and they're spies too in other countries. KGB is acronym in Russian.

in the first scene, he did slow play his aces, slow played the set on the flop, and the house on the turn. so he may quite possibly had pocket aces this hand also
