Protobuster asked rhetorically:
P> is miles always angry??
When I was younger, Playboy (1963 or so) had an interview with Miles. I read it and recall him saying (paraphrase), "When I was in school all the prizes went to the boys with the blue eyes. I made up my mind I was gonna outblow any white M....F... alive" which may account for the anger you suggest.
If he was angry, he used that emotion to do some marvelous music.

Jimmy Cobb: a monster drummer. How the man pushes the soloists at an even tide. He started out with altoist Earl Bostic. Coltrane, by the way, also came from the world of R&B.
I adore Wynton Kelly, but modal music clearly wasn't his bag.

"Miles and Coltrane never played a single "lick" in their lifetime" - You need to examine the entire Giants Steps album. Almost every tune has some type of "formulaic" lick/pattern over each chord, which is the way he approached these particular tunes, as a means to an end. He then proceeded to change his style and approach.
