-Admin password change
-Mac filter
-WPA or even WPA2 encryption
-Changing the SSID default name
-turn off broadcast
those 5 things will go a long way.

My problem is that I live in Florida, I have a linksys router connected to a modem. Everytime the electric goes out the router resets to factory defaults, during this time of year this is a daily occurance, making my computer unsecured. Is there anything I can do about this?

WEP can be cracked in less than a minute and WPA can be done in an hour or so if you know what you're doing. You shouldn't just use this encryption alone.
