yeah that is totally the rigth technique i usually cove my face with the left hand tho on hi kicks and keep my hands right in front of my face on the low ones and instead of landing back i use my right round kick and land foward as to use it as a step to close the distance and follow with knees or punches

That seems like it would be easy to notice. I dont know much about karate, but I know enough to read attacks. If your opponent is taking that much energy to kick you while obviously bringing their leg up to attack you can duck and sweep em. Then laugh hysterically at their epic phailer.
